Effect of Volatile Fatty Acids Accumulation on Biogas Production by Sludge-Feeding Thermophilic Anaerobic Digester and Predicting Process Parameters

چکیده

Sewage sludge represents an important resource for reuse in the wastewater treatment field. Hence, thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TAD) could be alternative technique to recover renewable resources from sludge. In TAD biodegradation process, volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are intermediate products of methanogenesis. However, higher formation and accumulation VFAs leads microbial stress, resulting acidification failure digester. Therefore, several batch TADs have been investigated evaluate production their impact on biogas generation efficiency. Three types sewage sludges, e.g., primary (PS), secondary (SS), mixed (MS) were used as substrates estimate yield methane gas. The system showed maximum total both PS MS 824.68 ± 0.5 mg/L 236.67 mg/L, respectively. dominant VFA was identified acetic acid, main by-product production. produced contained 66.75 0.5% 52.29 methane, high content with PS-feeding digesters due (i.e., mg/L) TAD. study also predicted design parameters process by fitting lab-scale experimental data well-known first-order kinetic logistic models. Such significantly before large-scale application process.

effect of volatile fatty acids in production of polyhydroxyalkanoates by activated sludge

polyhydroxyalkanoates (phas) is known to be temporarily stored by microorganisms in activated sludge, especially in the anaerobic-aerobic processes. the main objective of this study was to investigate the effects of fatty acids (vfas) compounds coexistence in substrate of sbr on phas productivity of activated sludge. it has been found that addition of different concentrations of vfas results in...

A review: factors affecting excess sludge anaerobic digestion for volatile fatty acids production.

This paper presents a review of methods that improve the production of volatile fatty acids (VFA) from excess sludge during the anaerobic digestion process. These methods are mainly divided into two approaches. The first approach is located in the pre-treatment methods, which change the properties of the substrates, such as thermal pre-treatment, alkaline pre-treatment, microwave pre-treatment ...

Effect of a Trace Element Addition Strategy on Volatile Fatty Acid Accumulation in Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Food Waste. Waste

Purpose: A trace element supplementation strategy previously shown to be effective in mesophilic conditions was tested for thermophilic digestion of source segregated domestic food waste. Method: Inoculum from a mesophilic anaerobic digester treating municipal wastewater biosolids was successfully acclimated to thermophilic temperature (55 o C) with food waste as a substrate. Four laboratory-sc...
